In today’s news:
Thanks to Keep Gordon County Beautiful (Representatives: Beth Vaughn and Judy Peterson) the arrival of roll off bins for paper recycling at Gordon County Compactor sites will be starting in May
Why Recycle Paper?
There are plenty of good reasons to recycle paper:
• It reduces greenhouse gases
• It takes 70% less water and energy to recycle paper than it does to make virgin paper
• It’s worth money – we are fortunate to have a paper recycling center here in Calhoun- North GA Textile Supply Recycling – and they want to recycle your paper
• Recycling just one ton of paper saves 17 trees
Gordon County was recently awarded a grant from the EPD to help make recycling paper more convenient, easy and transparent to all residents of GC.
With the help and collaboration of KCGB, Republic Waste Services and NGTC, Gordon County is bringing back paper recycling to all six compactor sites. The EPD grant allows for the purchase of new roll offs for each of the six compactor sites, to be used for paper collection. Once the bins fill, Republic Services will haul the roll offs to NGTC where it is sorted, baled and prepared for market.
We are very fortunate to have this opportunity and hope that each family in Gordon County will consider how they can contribute to the recycling effort.
Some people are quick to say, “recycling doesn’t work” or “most of it ends up in the landfill”. It’s a guarantee that it will go to the landfill IF you don’t recycle it. They do acknowledge there is good reason to doubt the recycling process. That is why they have incorporated a component to this project to ensure transparency and verification of the process. They will be allowed to track and monitor the frequency of shipments, they will receive a report of weights/ tonnage that will be shared with you. With this information, they can guarantee, that as long as the paper isn’t contaminated, it will be delivered to our vendor for recycling.
There are several other important resources that can also be recycled; cardboard, tin, aluminum, and plastic. By recycling all of these items, you will reduce your trash volume by 70 to 80%. It makes sense to recycle.
