Here’s a look at the news we covered today:
The Gordon County Board of Commissioners voted to separate the job of County Attorney and County Administrator. Going forward, James (Jim) Ledbetter will serve as administrator; MRP, a Rome, Georgia law firm will be retained as the county’s legal counsel.
Gordon County will repay Mohawk’s property tax over-payment; Georgia law requires the refund. The error was on Mohawk’s part, the company notified the county, Gordon County’s Tax Assessor verified the error. The refund is close to $142,000.
The VAC has seen an increase in the number of evictions. Many of those that they help with one week in a motel now need more time to reenter established housing. Often, according to VAC Director Miranda Bentley, the referrals to this program come from area school systems. One of the hopes of the center, according to Bentley, is to be ready – statistics show more and more under-housed citizens. Each year, through volunteers and local contributors, the VAC serves more than 27,000 hot meals, and provides direct assistance to local families.
Keep Calhoun and Gordon County Beautiful, recently recognized by Governor Brian Kemp, is emphasizing their paper recycling program. The group, in conjunction with many local businesses in focusing the current campaign on paper recycling.
