Weather related road closures were announced by Courtney Taylor, Director of Gordon County Emergency Management include Sam Hunt Road, Mauldin Road, and Langford Road. Other roads where Gordon County Public works put out safety cones include: Plainview Road, Taylor Town Road (near Johnson Lawn Care), Cook Road, Creek Ridge @ Covington Bridge, Pocket Road past Mtn. Loop, Walraven Road (Sugar Valley), Shope Lake Road @ Cornelison Road.
In arrests announced by The Gordon County Sheriffs Office, Gordon County Sheriffs deputies arrested Daniel Edward Woody, 38, of Calhoun and charged him with Aggravated Assault. City of Calhoun Police Officers arrested Moises Lopez-Nunez, 21, of Calhoun and charged him with Simple Battery/Family Violence; Sheriffs Deputies arrested Shawn Douglas Pitcher, 34, of Ranger; he is charged with Simple Battery/Family Violence. Sheriffs deputies also arrested Tomi Jo Ruggiero, 38, of Calhoun; she is charged with Battery and Family Violence.
The 2025 session of The Georgia State Legislature ended Friday. Property tax relief for those over 65, limits on jurors to award damages, and a lowered sate income tax rate (retroactive to January 1st of this year) passed. In the nearly 40 billion dollar budget, QBE, our longtime education metric, had a funding reduction of 113 million dollars. Fifty million dollars passed for school safety upgrades, including a panic button for every teacher.
This Sunday is the next Georgia High School Association Region Reclassification Meeting. These meetings will inform the final vote to add athletic competitiveness as a major factor in assigning Georgia High Schools to a region. Many factors, include budget concerns for travel, effect on other activities, and parental concerns are being considered.
This week is the vaccine drop by The USDA. These packets, distributed from helicopters and fixed wing aircraft, lower the rabies infections in wild animal (Primarily racoon) in wild animals. They are harmless to pets. If you encounter a packet, leave it alone or kick it into the nearest wooded area.
